AreaCompleted edit
Reading-folder introductionReplaced the obsolete twenty-five-entry and pending-review notes with the current thirty-nine-entry reading guide and links.
Every entry and indexRemoved pending-review and approved-foundation badges, drafting notices, dates identifying production stages, and repeated approval notices. Removed production provenance blocks from reader exports; internal evidence remains in Development.
HomeReplaced the sixteen-approved/remaining-pending distinction with a setting introduction. Replaced continuation labels with geographic reading routes.
AboutReplaced approval history, future-work lists and drafting guidance with navigation, reference periods, map/statistical conventions, credits, downloads and this change log.
Citizen livesRemoved first-edition versus continuation approval notices; retained the chronology of the citizen visits.
AtlasRemoved approval-dependent map descriptions and legend labels. Retained schematic distances, partial genealogy and absence of implied travel times.
Tarsenne landing pageRemoved instalment-review notices and map-approval caveats; retained the reference epoch and the map links.
Town landmark descriptionsRemoved author-facing warnings about an imagined gateway, an implied imperial arsenal and assumptions about untreated river water from landmarks 07, 12 and 16. Their actual bridge, workshop and washhouse descriptions remain.
Town map and gazetteerRemoved development labels, image-to-map drafting explanations and review notices from the viewer, SVG and gazetteer. Retained indicative scale, illustrative contours/property boundaries, route controls and the limits of geographic coverage.
Illustrations and heraldryRemoved approval/review badges from all installed figures and thumbnails, plus the separate heraldic-review note. Retained the pictures, explanatory captions and meanings of the emblems.
Reading copiesRegenerated individual Markdown, complete edition, Tarsenne volume and town gazetteer from the cleaned content. The obsolete first-review download is preserved privately and is no longer offered on the reading site.
Location reading guidePublished a reader-oriented guide covering geographic scales, subject categories, existing map controls, statistics and connected lives. Removed author instructions and future promises. Its eight subject categories organise reading; they do not claim that all existing entries have been expanded to the same length.

An empire across worlds

Paragraph text

Aveline Orinth is heir to a throne whose domain extends across worlds. Its populations, industries and fleets belong to an organised civilisation; its court can commission a royal hearing far from the inner provinces. Those are the foundations of this dossier. The capital, current sovereign, institutions and history developed below are new proposals for the almanac.

In the proposed Serev system, the Sarthene Empire on Damar is a peer whose jurisdiction Orinth does not absorb. Nereth, a moon of the outer giant Ossar, maintains an independent crown and valuable shipyards. Orinthian trade with both requires agreements, as it does with other powers across the rim. Further imperial holdings lie in other systems; this first atlas does not invent an exhaustive territorial census.

Her younger brother Odran shared some lessons and most public ceremonies. As children, they collected mistakes made by official portraitists: an extra braid, a vanished scar, the same ceremonial sword attached to three different ancestors. The collection gave them something private to enjoy within an intensely public family. This proposed intimacy establishes history between siblings without deciding any later motive or allegiance.

Paragraph text

Her strongest proposed aptitude is attentive public speaking: she remembers a petitioner’s name, can summarise a dispute clearly and dislikes losing an audience. She is less practised at allowing a conversation to finish somewhere she did not intend. The distinction matters. Being able to repeat a person’s grievance is not the same as permitting it to inconvenience her.

Formal designation does not establish exceptional psionic strength. Her exact competence before the voyage remains open; this edition does not supply secret mastery or infer it from her birth. Nor does it decide that she secretly practised spellcraft. Any such history would need to account for teachers, materials, opportunities and what those people believed they were helping her do.

The established purpose of her voyage was to hear the coastal settlements’ petition against North Quay’s customs claim on behalf of the Orinthian court, before returning to the inner provinces. It was an assignment with people and consequences attached. The manuscript does not establish that she had already selected a side.

The proposed personal ambition is straightforward: she wanted an assignment she could later describe without referring to what her mother had decided. She hoped to return with a judgement that would survive informed criticism. That hope could coexist with impatience, excitement about the journey and an incomplete understanding of the place she would visit.

Paragraph text

Before

The wider world will include varied climates and biomes capable of sustaining different settlements and journeys: temperate watersheds, dry interiors, colder uplands and polar regions, wetlands and coastal archipelagos. Their locations and ecological relationships need to be built into a planetary map before exact travel routes depend on them.

Unusual environments can arise from local geology, old engineering or arcane conditions, but each needs an explanation and consequences. This edition does not promise every environment next door to Reedbank. Adventure grows stronger when crossing between places requires preparation and produces real cultural change.

After

Tarsenne contains temperate watersheds, dry interiors, colder uplands and polar regions, wetlands and coastal archipelagos. Its regional atlas follows Rauth, Edrava and the islands across the Merean Sea.

Crossing between these environments requires preparation. A coastal household’s experience offers little assurance about conditions in a dry interior or a northern upland settlement.

Prince Terenne, Ysabet’s younger brother, is proposed as a patron of historical performance and a recurrent opponent of centralising archive policy. He remains in the wider succession after the sovereign’s eligible descendants. No renunciation is introduced. Aveline’s place follows the existing succession rule, not an uncle’s convenient removal.

This instalment records the world before the princess’s voyage. Country year reviews describe completed events from SR 682 and conditions observed at the opening of SR 683. Later events will require a new dated edition; a reader should not have to guess which side of a disaster a table belongs to.

For a journey outward from the novel’s first coast, read the Sedge Coast dossier, North Quay and Reedbank, then the northern and inland countries. For a comparison of institutions, place Halvyr’s succession beside Selnic’s elections, Veydan’s federal bargains and Orsala’s divided authorities. For lived consequences, begin with Istra’s repair bench and follow the materials she needs.

Maps, district descriptions and numbered landmarks are developed together. The city plans show selected principal streets and useful public destinations. They are authored reference plans for the setting, not claims that every alley, boundary or household has already been catalogued.

Eight shared subjects for the major worlds, realms, counties, cities and towns, developed at the scale of each place and connected to the people who live there.

After

How to follow the almanac through worlds, countries, districts and settlements, using its maps, reference tables and citizen lives.

Paragraph text

Before

Each major planet, country, county, city and town receives a substantial location dossier. Empires and other multi-world realms receive the same treatment at their own scale. Minor places can remain in a gazetteer until they matter enough to warrant a full entry. A passing place-name does not require an invented national history.

The subjects recur, but the institutions differ. A planetary entry explains the sky, environment and distribution of societies. A country explains its government and relationships with its neighbours. A county or district explains its delegated and local powers. A town explains its council or other authorities, households, streets, market and practical services. A world without a common government is described honestly as such.

The Orinthian Empire requires particular depth as Aveline’s homeland: its crown, family history, constituent worlds, provincial differences, court, finances, industries, public forces and ordinary lives. The shared structure organises this work; it does not certify that every existing entry is already complete.

After

The almanac follows major worlds, realms, countries, districts, cities and towns at different scales. Gazetteers identify smaller places and connect them to fuller accounts.

A planetary entry describes the sky, environment and distribution of societies. A country explains its government and neighbours. A district describes local powers; a town brings the account down to streets, households, markets and services.

Aveline’s homeland can be explored through the Orinthian Empire, House Orinth, the imperial provinces, the court and the lives of people in its cities.

Paragraph text

Before

The country almanacs of VectorShift provide the model for this reference structure. The earlier ten-part Tarsenne coverage remains useful: science, infrastructure, security and recreation are retained within the broader subjects below. Existing country entries need not lose material merely to acquire matching headings.

A finished dossier supplies specific names, places, histories and lived consequences beneath these headings. Missing knowledge is identified. Where an institution is absent, the entry explains how its work is handled, or what the absence costs residents. New setting details remain development for review.

After

The subjects below connect the location entries. Tarsenne’s fuller country profiles give science, public works, defence and leisure their own sections. Shorter entries concentrate on the place and direct readers to related subjects.

Paragraph text

Before

Maps belong with the places they explain. Planetary charts establish continents, oceans and principal regions. Country and county maps show settlements, administrative reach, routes, resources and strategic production. City and town plans show named streets, districts, important houses, government buildings, markets, industry, landmarks and defensive works where they exist.

Readers must be able to zoom in and out and pan across interactive maps. Labels and a written directory must remain usable as the view changes. Terrain, older paths, property boundaries and later construction can produce irregular street networks; every settlement need not resemble a planned grid. Exact control presentation will follow the map example Briana is supplying.

Illustrations accompany the relevant text: a local observance beside its account, a workshop beside its industry, heraldry beside the history that gives it meaning. The rim’s towns generally spread through worn industrial and residential districts. Their appearance and architecture should vary with local materials, climate, wealth and history.

The first city plans show selected central streets and destinations. Their limited extent is stated. New cartography remains authored development for review, with names and building uses checked against the accompanying text. The interactive map and its accessible gazetteer should describe the same place.

After

Planetary and regional diagrams establish the relationships between major places. City and town plans identify selected streets, districts, important houses, government buildings, markets, industry and defensive works.

Interactive city and town plans support zoom and pan. Their controls and written directories identify streets and landmarks. The system and district diagrams show relationships rather than surveyed distances.

Illustrations accompany local observances, work, households and heraldry. Architecture varies with materials, climate, wealth and history.

Map legends state the extent and conventions of each plan. A selected street network is not a complete property survey.

Paragraph text

Before

A planet’s physical circumstances should have consequences. Its light, seasons, geology, atmosphere and waters influence its living environments. Those environments affect food, materials, settlement, transport, livelihoods and political choices. The reference follows these connections down to the work and decisions of individual residents.

VectorShift’s introduction demonstrates this connected method. Tarsenne and the other worlds require their own causes and histories. Their original names, peoples and physical conditions are developed together; a striking astronomical feature is useful only when its consequences remain consistent throughout the almanac.

After

Light, seasons, geology, atmosphere and water affect food, materials, settlement and transport. Those conditions reach into livelihoods, institutions and individual households. Follow the related entries to trace these connections across different scales.

Paragraph text

Before

The first Tarsenne reference period is the opening of SR 683, before Aveline’s departure. A completed-year review refers to SR 682. Historical dates in that calendar do not silently convert to Compact Reckoning by subtraction. Earlier approved entries retain their provenance; this larger edition labels new material separately.

After

The Tarsenne reference period is the opening of SR 683, before Aveline’s departure. Completed-year accounts refer to SR 682. Imperial correspondence for the opening period uses CR 412; this correspondence does not supply a universal conversion for historical dates.

Paragraph text

Before

The test of a cultural custom is what a person does with it. The test of a transport network is whether someone can reach the promised appointment. Country profiles therefore include internal differences and lived consequences, while city entries include brief citizen moments. Longer recurring lives remain in the Lives section.

Rulers, councils, firms and settlements pursue purposes beyond the protagonist. Their trade, road works, alliances and conflicts develop from resources, distance, authority and choices. This allows the rim to keep moving while the story follows one person, without turning every neighbour into a scripted obstacle.

After

Citizen accounts connect work, household decisions and relationships to the places described elsewhere in the almanac. Longer recurring accounts appear in the Lives section.

Rulers, councils, firms and settlements have purposes of their own. Related entries follow the trade, obligations and conflicts that connect them.

Paragraph text

Before

Rauth Crossing is the working name for the settlement developed here from the approved Western Rauth illustration. The picture supplies its character: a broad, winding river beneath wooded slopes; low houses and workshops; rail freight, timber yards and a prominent crossing. The town spreads along the valley floor rather than climbing into a skyline of towers. Wet roofs, patched surfaces and machinery in use belong to the same landscape as gardens and inhabited rooms.

The plan calls the denser side Old Town Bank and the freight side Rail Bank. These are proposed names which keep the two banks legible without pretending that the picture establishes north. The detailed streets, building functions, ownership descriptions and local name are new development for review. Approval of the illustration does not settle those details.

After

Rauth Crossing spreads beside a broad, winding river beneath wooded slopes, with low houses and workshops, rail freight, timber yards and a prominent crossing. The town spreads along the valley floor rather than climbing into a skyline of towers. Wet roofs, patched surfaces and machinery in use belong to the same landscape as gardens and inhabited rooms.

Old Town Bank contains the denser older settlement; Rail Bank contains freight yards and hillside homes. The plan uses these names to distinguish the two banks. Its orientation is schematic rather than a compass bearing.

Paragraph text

Before

Crossing House and the Register Rooms give residents places to bring ordinary local business. Common School, Covered Provisions Market and Public Washhouse make the town useful to households as well as carriers. Lowbank Clinic occupies a raised terrace despite its neighbourhood name. The proposed arrangement puts care within the town's street network without moving a treatment room onto the wet working edge.

Bread Court and the Hook and Nail Inn belong beside the industrial premises in the account of the town. People need meals before early work and somewhere to meet when a house is crowded. The Warm Room provides a shared indoor place without requiring its users to purchase a drink. Three Gables House, Orchard House and Long Window Rooms begin a residential directory; the names do not yet supply their occupants with biographies. A place can be grim in bad weather and still contain a clean table, a repaired coat and someone pleased to see a familiar face.

The Upper Cistern, Boat Steps and Fire and Flood Store identify different practical needs. Water storage does not guarantee supply to every tap; river access does not make every bank safe at high water. Their detailed capacities, staffing and operating rules remain to be developed. Neither the town's local council nor the presence of industrial machinery establishes which larger state, if any, governs it.

Use the full-width plan to follow the named streets, inspect the numbered places and compare the two banks. The accompanying gazetteer records the new names and proposed uses. The orientation is an editorial arrangement for this plan, not a recovered compass reading. Distances, population, cadastral boundaries and journey times are not measured from the illustration.

The plan belongs to the almanac's public period before Aveline's departure. It does not place the town on her route or predict an encounter there. Future entries can develop its residents and connections once the geography and names have been reviewed. The approved valley artwork remains unchanged beside this more detailed interpretation.
